Native Whispers: A Second Place Boutique Garden by Emily Rubira
Some gardens ask you to move through them quickly. Others ask you to slow down.
Native Whispers belongs firmly in the latter.
Awarded Second Place in the Boutique Gardens at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, LCGD graduate Emily Rubira of Rubira by Design reflects a growing confidence in designing with both atmosphere and ecology in mind.
At its centre, a recycled-material greenhouse anchors the space. Not as a feature in isolation, but as part of a broader experience that encourages visitors to pause, observe and spend time within the garden.
The planting palette does much of the work. Layered, expressive and intentionally resilient, it supports pollinators while creating a sense of rhythm and seasonal change.
There’s a balance here that’s not always easy to achieve. A garden that feels gentle and considered, while still holding a strong design intent.
What Native Whispers demonstrates is the value of designing beyond first impression.
A space that reveals itself slowly, and rewards time spent within it.
