Student Achievement: Kate James Wins Border Garden Competition

Kate James of Terreverte Landscape Design, Winner of the 2025 LCGD Border Gardens Competition

At this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, second-year student Kate James of Terreverte Landscape Design took out top honours in the LCGD Border Garden Competition with her vibrant, story-rich design The Ancient Colours Garden.

Inspired by her passion for natural plant dyes, Kate used the pigments found in leaves, roots, and flowers as the foundation of her concept. Her garden combined plant species used for dye-making with panels hand-coloured using the very pigments she cultivates, blurring the line between horticulture, artistry, and storytelling.

Described by judges as “a masterclass in colour and plant narrative,” The Ancient Colours Garden was both a visual and conceptual standout at the show, earning Kate first place and widespread admiration from visitors and industry peers.

Her achievement reflects the creativity, innovation, and depth of thinking that LCGD students bring to every design challenge.
